Training Opportunities – September 7, 2012

On Wednesday, September 9 from 1-2 pm (pacific), the Oregon Health Authority will host the webinar Engaging Diverse Populations in Living Well and Tomando Control de su Salud Programs. The webinar will cover how organizations across Oregon have been bringing Living Well and Tomando programs to diverse audiences, including people with mental health conditions and low income populations, just to name a few.

On Tuesday, September 11th from 10:00 – 11:30 am (pacific), the Public Health Law Center will host the webinar Voting for Tobacco Control: Headaches, Hazards and Opportunities.  The program will explore how states and local communities have used ballot measures to support tobacco control and the advantages and disadvantages of this strategy.

On Wednesday, September 12th from 10:00 – 11:30 am (pacific), the National Health Worksite Program will host the second webinar in a series, Healthy Worksite 101 Webinar: Assessment and Data Collection.

On Thursday, September 13th at 5:00 pm (pacific), the National PTA and the Kids’ Safe and Healthful Foods Project are hosting a Virtual Back to School Night: The School Day Just Got Healthier.  This will be an interactive discussion about updated nutrition standards for school meals and new meals coming to schools near you.  Submit questions ahead of time online here or tweet them live using #SchoolFoodsRule.

On Monday, September 17th from noon – 1:00 pm (pacific), the National Association of Local Boards of Health will host the webinar Leveraging Partnerships to Promote Tobacco Prevention and Control at the State, Local, and Tribal Levels.  Presenters from Utah and Oklahoma will highlight their partnership experiences.

On Thursday, September 20th from 11:00 am – noon (pacific), the Directors of Health Promotion and Education will host the webinar School Employee Wellness Case Studies.  Recent Gold Level winners of the DHPE School Employee Wellness Awards from Washington, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania will share how they planned, implemented, and sustained successful programs.  Registration is free for members.

On Thursday, September 20th from 10:00 – 11:30 am (pacific) the Tobacco-Related Disease Reerch Program at the University of California will host the webinar Varenicline: where are we today?  The panel of speakers will discuss the research on the use of Varenicline (Chantix) for smoking cessation treatment.

On Tuesday, September 25th from 11:00 am – noon (pacific) the Office of Smoking and Health will host the webinar Can an Old Policy Tool Work for Current Tobacco Control Initiatives, featuring an assessment the Oregon Tobacco Prevention and Education Program conducted on whether tobacco retail licensure is the right tool in Oregon for changing the tobacco retail environment.   To join the webinar, click here and call: 1.866.880.0098 (participant code: 41445493).

On Tuesday, September 25th at 10:00 am (pacific), ChangeLab Solutions will host the webinar, Beating Big Tobacco to the Punch: Regulating Emerging Products Early.  The webinar will explore new tobacco products, policy options available to address new products, and how to craft messages to pass new policies.

On Thursday, September 27th from 10:00 – 11:30 am (pacific), the Smoking Cessation Leadership Center will host the webinar Thirdhand Smoke: Clinical and Policy Approaches, featuring Jonathan Winickoff, Associate Professor of Pediatrics at Harvard Medical School.

Meetings

The Annual Diabetes Practice Update will be held Friday, October 5 at the Oregon Convention Center. This education activity is designed for health professionals with an interest in diabetes management issues.

The National Center for Tobacco Policy is hosting a Summit on Tobacco Policy October 4-6 in Kansas City, Missouri to discuss tobacco-free campus policy implementation in higher education institutions and hospitals.

The 2012 Public Health Law Conference “Practical Approaches to Critical Challenges” will be held October 10-12 in Atlanta.

The SOPHE 63rd Annual Meeting Mining Golden Opportunities: Health Education Policy, Research, and Practice” will be held October 25 – 27 in San Francisco.

The 140th Annual Meeting & Exposition of the American Public Health Association
will be held October 27 – 31, 2012 in San Francisco.
