Congratulations, Philadelphia!

SSB_sugarIn June, Philadelphia became the first large city to approve a special tax on sweetened beverages — 1.5 cents per ounce. The tax will target regular and diet sodas, sports drinks, energy drinks and other nonalcoholic beverages with added sweeteners.  The funds will be used to expand prekindergarten programs; improve parks, recreation centers and libraries; create community schools and offer a tax credit to businesses that offer healthy beverages. Philadelphia’s sweetened beverage tax is a direct result of public health officials trying to turn the tide of obesity and diabetes.

Soda and other sweet drinks tied to risk for some rare cancers

This article looks at a Swedish study that suggests that people who drink lots of soda and other sugary beverages may have a higher risk of developing rare cancers in the gallbladder and bile ducts around the liver.  

Community Preventive Services Task Force Releases 2016 Annual Report to Congress

The Community Preventive Services Task Force published its annual report to Congress, federal agencies, and prevention stakeholders. The report overviews the 17 recommendations made by the task force in FY 2015 related to the following areas:

  • cardiovascular disease prevention and control
  • health disparities (promoting health equity)
  • increasing appropriate vaccination.

FDA Report: Menu and Vending Machines Labeling Requirements

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has finalized two rules requiring that calorie information be listed on menus and menu boards in chain restaurants and similar retail food establishments and vending machines. The Menu Labeling Final Rule applies to restaurants and similar retail food establishments if they are part of a chain of 20 or more locations, doing business under the same name, offering for sale substantially the same menu items and offering for sale restaurant-type foods. The Vending Machine Final Rule requires operators who own or operate 20 or more vending machines to disclose calorie information for food sold from vending machines, subject to certain exemptions.

FDA Releases Draft Guidance on Voluntary Sodium Reduction in Processed and Prepared Foods

sodiumFDA released a draft guidance outlining voluntary sodium reduction goals in commercially processed, packaged, and prepared foods. The draft guidance includes scientific background on sodium consumption and heart disease, and proposes short-term and long-term sodium limits for nearly 200 different processed and prepared foods. This draft guidance will be open for public comment by Aug. 31.

Study Forecasts ‘Silver Tsunami’ of Cancer Survivors

The aging of the U.S. population will result in a substantial increase in the number of older cancer survivors over the next quarter century, particularly those 85 and older, according to a new study by NCI researchers. Using statistical models to analyze population data, the researchers estimated that the overall number of cancer survivors in the United States will continue to grow substantially.

When schools and community organizations promote the intake of water as an alternative to sugary beverages, they can help prevent obesity and tooth decay and improve overall well-being. Study shows the Diabetes Self-Management program improves health

A study that examined the impacts of the Stanford Diabetes Self-Management Program, both in-person and online, shows the effectiveness of the program: six months after completing the program, participants reported statistically significant improvements in 6 of 7 health indicators. Read more about results of the study and learn more about on-line diabetes self-management education.
