“California voters agreed to significantly increase the tax on cigarettes and vaping devices, but similar measures fell short in Colorado, North Dakota and Missouri, according to late Tuesday vote tallies. California’s Proposition 56 will increase taxes on a pack of cigarette from 87 cents to $2.87,” Reuters reported. Read more.

Researchers found that black people who smoked one pack or more of cigarettes daily were at a 62% increased risk of developing diabetes, compared with those who smoked less than one pack a day, former smokers and those who had never smoked. The findings, presented at the American Heart Association’s annual meeting, were based on almost 3,000 black individuals in the Jackson Heart study, 466 of whom were diagnosed with diabetes.
